The shampoo area of salons have certainly evolved over the years. Shampoo bowls were only mounted to the wall or side of cabinets for side-washing only. Standard shampoo chairs in the past were simply auto-recline with the client laying back to allow the back cushion to move back with the client, or a lever-control activated back cushion to recline. Recline levers can be sensative and sticky, they can break, and that can all lead to frustration. While each of those options and features are all still available, technology and time have allowed for the innovation of backwashing techniques and backwash units, and electric shampoo chairs. Electric shampoo chairs allow you to control the upward and downward movements of the chair at the tips of your fingers by using a hand-held remote. The electric shampoo chair has a fixed relationship between the seat and back, and the chair moves up toward the bowl at an approximate 30 degree angle for seamless transition into shampooing position. No need to use a footpedal to pump the chair up and down, or recline it back! See our Collins "ES" series of electric shampoo chairs to take a look for yourself - available as a 12ES, 14ES, 15ES, 16ES, 18ES, 19ES, 67ES, and 69ES. You'll want to ensure you have bowls installed at the proper height as well as proper electrical sourcing to bring this setup from dream to reality. Some shampoo chairs, and even backwashes, also have an electric legrest; see our 2850 and 2880 models. In only a few seconds, you can raise and lower the legrest of your chair through similar, electric controls. If you're looking for a change, electric shampoo chairs are a way to go.

A couple of weeks ago, we talked about the importance of properly moving around our portable hair dryers and portable hair processors in your space. Did you know you can also order most versions of our hair dryers and hair processors to be wall mounted? Whether you're in an open area salon, you're in a salon suite, or providing services out of your home, wall mounted hair dryers and wall mounted hair processors are beneficial space-savers that still operate the same as their portable versions. How much space does this wall mount version need? Let's dive in. The power cord is approximately 6 1/2 feet long, so you'll want to accommodate electrical sourcing accordingly. When the unit is not in use and it's folded up against the wall, it's approximately 3 feet. When in use, the wall arm is approximately 3 feet from the wall bracket to the hinge point and moves side to side, and the arm from the hinge point to the center of the hood is approximately 2 feet and moves both side to side and up and down to go on and off clients' heads. This gives the unit about a 5 foot radius when fully extended out. This can be particularly helpful in a salon setting because you can install the wall mount dryer or wall mount processor in between two stations so each pair of stations can share one unit. Use it in both tight spaces and open spaces! Please follow the manufacturer's recommended guidelines for properly installing and supporting the unit.

Preserving your chair vinyl is an important part of keeping your chairs and salon looking new, clean and fresh. Chair vinyl, like any other vinyl, can be bent several different ways, folded and molded to what you're using it for. While the vinyl takes to all of the folds and molds you need it for, it may also show some unintended creases and lines when something heavy is placed on, or, in it. We had this happen in our showroom. We stacked several product catalogs on the seat cushion of a styling chair as we were going through and reorganizing them. After leaving them there overnight and restarting the project the next morning to clear them off the chair and back where they needed to go, we were left with creases and indents in the seat cushion from the stack of catalogs. Bummer. Fortunately, there are ways to get it out. One is you can use a blow dryer to warm the vinyl, which helps stretch the vinyl and soften it. You don't want to touch the end of the blow dryer to the vinyl, but just hover over the vinyl and get it warm-to-hot enough to still touch. You may not get it out the first time, but you can repeat the process a couple times a day or once a day as you see fit. Two is the normal usage of it. When clients sit in the chair, their body warmth and heat over the time of the service being done will help stretch and shape the vinyl. Another way is, if the chair is easily movable and not being used, you can move it outside on a warm, sunny day and the warmth of the sun can naturally work on the creases and lines. Again, any or all of these processes may need to be done multiple times, but the fact of the matter is that most, if not all, creases come out if given time and appropriate attention. If all else fails, call one of our support reps here and we can begin the process of helping you replace cushions, which will be more economical for you than buying a whole new chair.

If you're a salon owner or chair operator, you know your chair is your money maker. It's gotta look good and it's gotta work properly. Taking it a step further, the hydraulic pump is the heartbeat to your chair. If it doesn't go up or come down, it might as well be dead. These days, hydraulic pumps vary in quality depending on where they are made and with what materials they are made of. The saturation of the cheaper, imported product (check out our "American Made vs. Import" post) makes for a less reliable and less durable pump. However, getting yourself started with a high-quality, heavy-duty hydraulic pump gives you a strong chance to make your investment count for years to come. Along the way, hydraulic pumps need to be maintained and looked after, just like cars, houses, or any other mechanical goods. Here's a few tips to get the most out of your hydraulic pump: One, keep your baseplate looking shiny and new by cleaning it with all purpose cleaner, every so often or as often as you see fit. For lubricating your pump shaft, using general purpose 3-in-1 oil is what we recommend. It's a light oil and a little goes along way with it. You'll apply at the low point of the pump, then pump to the high point to apply around the shaft there. Then you can work the shaft up and down and turn the chair around so that all the parts of the shaft are appropriately accounted for. Please do not use WD-40. If your pump begins making noise, like a squeaky noise, apply a little grease at the yoke (the part that pushes down on your plunger when you're pumping your chair up) and the fork after lifting up on, or taking off, the cap on the top of the pump. These are really the only two areas where you'll see working components that may need attending to. Other than that, if you don't use your chair very often, it's recommended that you pump your chair up and down 8-10 times a week in order to keep everything lubricated and the pump running smoothly. Let us know if you need a replacement base and we can take the necessary steps to get you set up accordingly.

You want the look of your salon or spa to be inviting, relaxing, and a place where clients want to make it their "home base" for their beauty needs. One of the most important aspects to consider is the color schemes you want in your equipment. Lighter colors and darker colors have their pros and cons. Lighter colors will make your space look bigger, cleaner, and more fresh - that is, if you're willing to manage and keep up on it. Darker colors will tend to hide and not show dirt, dust, color spills, etc., but it's a standard color many use. The constant struggle between going bold with white, or safe with a dark color like black, brown or gray, can be tough for some. Here are a couple tips to consider when going white. First, the chairs. These are your highest-usage, so naturally, they'll pick up and show any inconsistencies at a quicker rate. Further, you're not always able to control what clients wear or what environments they come from when they enter the chair. For example, clients who wear blue jeans may not realize it sometimes may leave a little blue or black from the denim in the white chair after they're done. One thing we offer on our chairs are clear plastic back covers. This helps in maintaining the look of the chair for longer. We also sell replacement cushions, which are far more cost-effective than buying a whole new chair. White shampoo bowls are somewhat easier to get away with. If you're doing a lot of color, the white bowl is a nice backdrop in determining when you've got all the color out of your client's hair. But remember, enough color residue and build up that is not regularly cleaned and maintained will make your white bowl no longer look white. White stations are, I feel, the most reasonable and easy to maintain. My main reason for this is that at your station, you're in control of what you do in your space there. You know if you need to clean your hands before touching the station or it's components, or not to set dirty towels on the ledge. Yes, inconsistencies will still show if not accounted for so you'll want to continue to be quick in cleaning and diligent in maintaining the "shine" of your white station.

A salon or spa owner can pull the "white look" off as long as they coach the stylists and technicians on care for the equipment and are actively engaged and willing to keep it up. We're all a team, and it's no different than a team effort in anything else!
